Question
Asalam alaikom Sheikh
I wanted to ask you - how can we (the ordinary joe soap muslim) know who to take from and who not?

Answer:
First, the more a Muslim studies his religion and stays with people who follow the correct Aqidah and strictly stick to the Sunnah, the more he will be able to recognise what is wrong.
This involves listening to and following the senior and well known scholars of Ahl Al-Sunnah, who have a history of themselves learning from scholars before them, and are also recognized by other scholars similar to them. If a person or group is considered, it should be considered in light of what such scholars say about them, and the good references they have. One major sign of a group or individual who is deviated is that he turns away from the scholars of hadith and Sunnah, speaks negatively about them, or befriends and supports heretics and people who oppose the scholars. It is not possible for a person/caller to Islam/'Sheikh to knowingly support or assist other individuals or groups who oppose the correct aqidah or go against the Sunnah, except that he himself is a deviant.
This is a process of learning, and sticking with people who have knowledge, and not yourself blindly and unconditionally supporting a group or individual no matter what he says or does. Rather, the sincere Muslim is ready to accept the truth when it comes to him or is clarified for him, even if it means going against ones tribe, group, movement or party. If someone does not do this, he is guilty of falling into sectarianism and partisan politics, which are forbidden in Islam because they involve rejecting the truth, supporting those who anger Allah, and distorting the religion. I'm sure this can be elaborated on further if we need to as it is a very important subject in this day and age.
